THE STRUCTURE AND DIFFERENCES OF DISCUSSION ESSAY WRITING IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK

Author: Bobomurotova, Shahnoza Shuhratovna

Annotation: Academic writing plays a crucial role in modern education as it enables students to demonstrate linguistic competence, analytical thinking, and the ability to construct logical arguments. Among various forms of academic writing, the discussion essay occupies a significant position because it encourages writers to examine different perspectives on a particular issue before presenting a balanced conclusion. In recent decades, discussion essays have become increasingly important in international language examinations, university assessments, and professional academic contexts. Despite sharing common communicative purposes, discussion essays written in different languages often reflect distinct rhetorical traditions, organizational patterns, and linguistic conventions. The findings reveal that English discussion essays generally follow a highly standardized and linear organizational pattern, whereas Uzbek discussion essays demonstrate greater structural flexibility and a stronger tendency toward explanatory discourse. Although both traditions emphasize logical reasoning and balanced argumentation, differences can be observed in the use of discourse markers, authorial voice, and persuasive techniques. The results contribute to the fields of academic writing, contrastive rhetoric, discourse analysis, and language education. Furthermore, the study provides practical insights for teachers and learners seeking to improve academic writing skills in multilingual educational environments.

Keywords: discussion essay, academic writing, English language, Uzbek language, contrastive rhetoric, argumentation, discourse analysis, cohesion, coherence, academic literacy.
