Annotation: The article examines the ways in which N. V. Gogol employs linguistic means to create and model the characters of his heroes. It analyzes the lexical, syntactic, and stylistic features that shape a character's speech portrait and reveal his psychological and social traits. It is shown that tropes, comic effects, the grotesque, and dialectal elements play a key role in constructing the artistic image.
