Annotation: China is currently promoting Chinese language learning around the world as part of its efforts to achieve its foreign policy goals through soft power. This article begins by defining soft power and discussing how and why China is attempting to establish and spread it. The article then describes the ways in which China has promoted Chinese language learning and the results of these efforts. The article argues that while China’s efforts have been successful in creating a positive image of the Chinese language and attracting learners, there are still barriers to promoting Chinese language learning and, by extension, China’s soft power.
