Annotation: This article examines the phenomenon of irony (皮肉, hiniku) in Japanese culture from linguistic and pragmatic perspectives. The study analyzes the main types of irony narrative irony (ストーリー的皮肉), situational irony (状況的皮肉), and verbal irony (皮肉発話) based on the classification proposed by Yoshimura Akiko. The paper also reviews major theoretical approaches to the interpretation of irony, including Grice’s Cooperative Principle, Utsumi’s implicit display theory, Sperber and Wilson’s echoic theory, and Clark and Gerrig’s pretense theory. In addition, Ota Izumi’s concept of communicative insincerity is discussed as an important theoretical framework for understanding the pragmatic nature of irony. Based on relevant scholarly sources, the article explores the use of irony in various contexts in the Japanese language, as well as its linguistic forms and communicative mechanisms.
