Annotation: This article highlights the specific features of speech disorders in mentally retarded children. The author shows the inextricable link between speech development and mental development, and analyzes the phonetic, lexical and grammatical defects of speech in mentally retarded children. It also reveals how weak phonemic hearing, limited vocabulary and incorrect use of grammatical structures negatively affect the oral and written speech activities of mentally retarded children. The article shows ways to eliminate speech disorders through recommendations based on psychological, pedagogical and speech therapy approaches.
