Annotation: This article analyzes the causes behind the escalation of political and military conflicts among countries at the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries. The author examines the concept of world order, the processes of its transformation and erosion, and draws scholarly conclusions about the nature of relations among major powers whose number is increasing and which are striving for global dominance. The paper also explores the main trends in the formation of a multipolar world and their impact on international relations.
