Annotation: This article analyzes the grave and pilgrimage culture of Muslim peoples based on the work of the German traveler Johann Schiltberger, who lived in the early 15th century, “Travels through Europe, Asia and Africa (1394–1427)”. Through the author’s observations in Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran and the Middle East, burial rituals, the custom of washing the dead, the location of graves, the traditions of praying for the souls of the deceased, and the activities of religious institutions are studied. Schiltberger’s information is analyzed comparatively with other historical sources, and its role in the formation and development of the pilgrimage culture in medieval Muslim societies is highlighted. The results of the study show that Schiltberger’s travelogue is one of the important sources in the study of religious and ethnographic history.
