Annotation: This article analyzes cultural concepts that exist in different languages, but are difficult to fully express in one word in English. The research material was selected from examples provided by users in online discussions. They were considered not as a dictionary definition, but from the point of view of how ordinary speakers of the language perceive and try to explain the cultural meaning. The analysis was based on the concepts of saudade, hiraeth, sobremesa, hygge, lagom, sisu, tarof, ubuntu, kapwa, gezelligheid, apapacho, meraki, filotimo and others. The main idea of the article is that the difficulty of translation does not arise from the limitations of the English language, but from the fact that some meanings are closely associated with a particular cultural experience, social relations and value system.
Keywords: cultural concept, translation, non-equivalence, language and culture, linguistic worldview, intercultural communication.
