Annotation: The verb category plays a central role in expressing tense, state, and various aspects of action in any language. In this regard, grammatical categories such as aspect hold special significance in linguistics. Although the distinction between aspect and tense is sometimes subtle, analyzing them separately allows for a deeper understanding of the semantic nature of actions. The grammatical formation of aspect as a category in the Japanese language is a complex historical process, during which semantic distinctions were gradually integrated into the grammatical system through auxiliary verbs. This article analyzes the stages of the development of the aspect concept in Japanese linguistics from the early 20th century onward. Based on the works of scholars such as Takahashi, Kindaiichi, Suzuki, Yoshikava, the article explores how aspectual forms evolved into a grammatical category within the Japanese verbal system. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of Japanese verb morphology and its typological features.
Keywords: aspect, auxiliary verb, tense, category, grammatical meaning.
