Annotation: This article is devoted to the study of the semantic and functional characteristics of Japanese idioms and proverbs from a linguocultural perspective. The author analyzes Japanese fixed expressions (kanyoku, kotowaza) as an important means of expressing the national consciousness, historical experience and cultural values of the people. The role of studying idioms in mastering Japanese as a foreign language, the importance of forming figurative thinking in students and increasing communicative competence are substantiated.
