Annotation: This article is devoted to the study of the semantic and functional characteristics of Japanese idioms and proverbs from a linguocultural perspective. The author analyzes Japanese fixed expressions (kanyoku, kotowaza) as an important means of expressing the national consciousness, historical experience and cultural values ​​of the people. The role of studying idioms in mastering Japanese as a foreign language, the importance of forming figurative thinking in students and increasing communicative competence are substantiated.
