Annotation: In the field of world literary studies, numerous scholarly works have been produced to date on the issues of dramaturgy and genre. In particular, there exists a body of research dedicated to the specific characteristics of Chinese literature in the final quarter of the 20th century. This article discusses the distinctive features of postmodernist plays in Chinese dramaturgy. Dramaturgy is a complex field, in which — alongside the three historical phases of classical, modern, and postmodern drama — realism and modernism also play significant roles. When compared to postmodernism, the three preceding trends (classicism, realism, and modernism) share a common trait: they all strive for aesthetic consistency and aim to deliver a relatively pure aesthetic experience.
