Annotation: The article examines the ancient Chinese military treatise “Wujing Zongyao” (“Essentials of the Military Classics”), compiled during the Northern Song dynasty in the 11th century. It analyzes the historical background, authorship, structure, and key ideas of the work. Particular attention is given to the treatise’s practical nature, which unites theoretical and technical aspects of warfare — from army organization and training to descriptions of weapons and fortifications. The study highlights “Wujing Zongyao” as a unique source for understanding Chinese military thought and the administrative culture of the Song era.
