THE SIBERIAN INTERNMENT OF ISHIHARA YOSHIRO WRITTEN IN "NOSTALGIA AND THE SEA"

Abdrahimova, Diyora

This paper examines the essence of humanity in extreme conditions through an essay published by the poet Yoshirō Ishihara, fifteen years after his return from Siberia.Ishihara perceives the very fact of surviving the harsh life of the labor camps as a "degradation of humanity," carrying a profound sense of guilt toward those who perished. In the camps, the death of an individual was transformed into the statistical death of a collective. Ishihara emphasizes the terror of being unable to die as a "named individual.". The paper details the process by which mutual trust is lost, replaced by a deep-seated distrust of others and "near-group hatred" (narcissistic rage) as a price for survival. To endure, it became essential to adopt "apathy" as a means of self-defense and enter a state of "aphasia"—where the reality of the situation becomes impossible to express through language. The author concludes that this work was written as a way for Ishihara to re-examine his own experiences and to record and mourn his compatriots who fell in Siberia.
