Author: Ökmen, Yunus Emre

Annotation: Kutadgu Bilig, one of the fundamental works of 11th century Turkish-Islamic thought, can be evaluated not only as a text of political virtues or management philosophy, but also as a communication ethics. Yusuf Has Hacip offers a rich content on how “speech” should be used to ensure both individual virtue and public order. In this respect, this study offers analyses from a communication perspective by focusing on the place of “communication” in Yusuf Has Hacip’s philosophical thought, the moral dimension of speech, accurate information, ambassadorship and carrying of news, the relationship between the ruler and the people, and the role of communication in educating the society. Based on selected couplets in Kutadgu Bilig, it aims to reveal the practices of knowledge transfer, verbal manipulation and public order establishment of the early Turkish peoples. At the same time, the similarities of this understanding of communication with today's media ethics and public communication principles should be addressed with a comparative approach. In this context, Yusuf Has Hâcip's philosophical legacy is open to reinterpretation not only in terms of history but also in terms of contemporary communication theories. Considering that today is the age of communication and technology, it is known and accepted by everyone that media and communication tools have a great responsibility. However, it is an undeniable fact that people and societies are losing correct information, morality and virtue day by day in the face of the traumas they experience. At this point, people and societies need traditional texts, values and advice that belong to nature and original culture. In this respect, Kutadgu Bilig and communication ethics, media ethics are intended to be reconsidered through traditional texts and values. The study was conducted by taking into account the techniques of qualitative research method [1, s. 130].
