Author:

Annotation: This article, based on Chinese written sources, examines trade and ambassadorial relations between the descendants of Amir Temur and the emperors of the Ming Dynasty. After Amir Temur's death, relations between the empires were restored. Gifts sent from Samarkand and Herat included horses, local crafts, jade, and wild animals. The Yongle Emperor actively encouraged the expansion of trade and attempted to increase the number of embassies sent to China. After his death, China abandoned its earlier expansionist policy due to its high cost and ineffectiveness. Costly expeditions, such as the naval missions of the famous admiral Zheng He, were also discontinued. However, trade and ambassadorial ties continued until the late 16th century.
