Annotation: Before analyzing any of the specific legal institutions that governed traditional Islamic cities, it is necessary to examine—however briefly—some of the fundamental social characteristics of these cities and the legal principles underpinning their way of life and administrative systems. Only then can the legal and administrative institutions of Islamic societies—whether urban or agrarian—be fully understood.
