Annotation: This article analyzes the origin of imitative words, their place in the language system and linguistic features. It is shown that in the history of linguistics, the theory of sound imitation has been formed in different periods, starting from the views of ancient Greek philosophers, including Democritus and Plato. The difference of imitative words from other word groups, their semantic and syntactic features, and the mechanisms of expression in different languages are analyzed comparatively. Also, the similarities and differences of imitative words in English, Russian, Japanese, Chinese and Uzbek are considered, and the opinions of various scholars are presented. The article comprehensively covers the place of imitative words as grammatical objects, their nominative features, and the meanings and concepts expressed through them.
